From our small coastal villages to communities across the world, women fishers stand strong — protecting the sea, sustaining livelihoods, and keeping traditions alive.
Today (5 November), we celebrate women in small-scale fisheries everywhere.
Our voices matter. Our work matters.
We’re finally being seen. ![]()
Aunt Joy : Hey Ki, did you know that every year on November 5th, it’s the day to honor women in small-scale fisheries? There are so many women like us around the world who work in fishing communities. This day is really meant to recognize all of us!
Ki: Really, Aunt Joy? I didn’t know that!
Aunt Joy: Yes! From now on, it’s not just a special day — it’s also a reminder of our daily struggles, our livelihoods, and our efforts to protect and restore natural resources. We’ll keep talking about these issues together. I’m so happy that we now have a day that belongs to us!
Ki: That’s right. There are so many fisherwomen around the world, right?
Aunt Joy: Yes, many — from different countries and continents. In Africa, in Asia, especially in coastal areas like ours, there are lots of women fishers. And now the world is finally recognizing the importance of women in fisheries.
Ki: That’s true. Women fishers are everywhere — and we’re finally being seen.
